ATP implements new rules to put an end to abusive “toilet breaks”

The Flushing Meadows controversy will have had significant repercussions. During the last US Open, the long breaks in the toilets of Stefanos Tsitsipas and others had caused several skin reactions from observers and some players including Andy Murray, opponent of the Greek in the first round. The ATP therefore decided to tackle the problem, following the experimentation set up during the last Next Gen Masters. The newspaper L’Equipe was able to see the document establishing the future rule sent to the players.

As in Milan a few days ago, each player will only have the right to a “toilet break” not exceeding the limit of 3 minutes in 2022. In the event of a total change of outfit in the locker room, the tolerance will then be extended at 5 minutes. These breaks can only be taken at the end of a set.

In case of exceeding the time, a “warning” then gradual sanctions (point of penalty, game of penalty, etc.) will be applied the more the delay of the player will be important. This should minimize interruptions to actual playing time.
