ATP > Federer on a player’s bond with… his racket: “Every tennis player knows what I’m talking about. You try not to break it, but sometimes you get so angry with it that you think it’s a mistake of the racket.”

Tennis is a mentally demanding sport that requires a great deal of concentration and adaptability.

And of course, in a sport that makes you angry frequently, it often happens that the first victim of the players’ anger is their racket.

Roger Federer was quite violent towards his racket early in his career, but quickly learned to control his emotions. But he explained in an interview for Tennis Channel that the bond between a tennis player and his racket was truly special.

“It’s a very personal relationship. I’ve always thought of them as an extension of your arm or your hand, so it’s very personal. Every tennis player knows what I’m talking about. You take care of them, you regrip them. When you go into a match, you make sure the strings are where you want them… You try not to break them, you try not to hurt them, but sometimes you get so mad at them that you think it’s a mistake by the racquet, but the racquet knows it’s you.”
