The beginning of what for Jannik Sinner has been called “the year of change” is not the best. In fact, the ghosts of the past have come knocking on the door of the South Tyrolean, with the news of a new injury remedied in the quarter-finals of the Adelaide 1 tournament. The 21-year-old from Sesto Pusteria he bowed out to world No. 33 Sebastian Korda with the score of 7-5 6-1, and in the second set he was slowed down by a problem with his left hip, which could lead to a very heavy stop in view of the first Grand Slam of the season.

At the end of a first set played evenly and in which he had three set points available in response at 5-4, Sinner felt discomfort in his left hip. The cause: an unsuccessful recovery attempt almost in a split which then required the intervention of the physiotherapist. During the treatment the microphones positioned in the field managed to capture a sentence pronounced by the blue: “Even the groin”, to indicate the entire affected area to be treated.

Once the singles match concluded, Sinner then withdrew from the doubles tournament where he was running alongside Lorenzo Sonego. The two were due to face Britain’s Jamie Murray and New Zealander Michael Venus in the quarterfinals. Now a real race against time will begin for Jannik as the Australian Open is just 10 days away and he will have to undergo all the necessary checks to fully understand the extent of the problem and deal with it in the best possible way. The blue had also decided to attend the “Kooyong Classic” exhibition tournament, scheduled for next week, an appointment that he will most likely miss.
