The Nashville Predators and forward Yakov Trenin have begun the arbitration process.
Both parties are awaiting the neutral referee’s decision regarding the 25-year-old striker’s new contract. If they fail to reach an agreement before the final decision, Trenin would become the first player since Tyler Bertuzzi in 2020 to need arbitration.
Trenin had the best season of his young career in 2021-22, with 17 goals and 24 points in 80 games. He also moved the ropes three times in the Preds’ four playoff games against the Avalanche.
The six-foot-two Russian was on a one-year deal worth $750,000 last season.
Jesper Bratt of the New Jersey Devils will be the next player to need refereeing. His hearing will take place on Wednesday.
CJ Smith agrees with Rangers
New York Rangers president and general manager Chris Drury announced Tuesday that the team has signed forward CJ Smith to a one-year contract.
The 27-year-old Smith played 60 games for the Chicago Wolves in the AHL last season, scoring 24 goals and 34 assists for a total of 58 points. He finished the season ranked third on his team in goals, assists and points. He also had nine points in 16 playoff games to help Wolves win the Calder Cup.
The Des Moines, Iowa native appeared in 15 NHL games with the Carolina Hurricanes and Buffalo Sabers, recording three points
