The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) announced on Thursday that maintenance work on the country’s Air Traffic Management System (ATMS) will prevent future occurrences of power outages, such as the one that caused the shutdown of the Philippine airspace on January 1. According to CAAP spokesperson Eric Apolonio, the second phase of repairs, which includes the replacement of uninterruptible power supplies and other upgrades to the ATMS, will take about 4.5 hours. However, for caution, the suspension of aviation operations will be extended to six hours. Only manually operated flights, such as military and emergency flights, will be allowed during the suspension. The replacement of equipment and system upgrades are critical to ensuring maximum safety and efficiency in the country’s air traffic management.
