Atltico published this Thursday evening (29/12) a tribute paid to Pel at the MRV Arena. The alvinegro stadium, which will be inaugurated from 25 March 2023, has turned off the lights of the athletic symbol and left only the star lit, as a form of homage to the King of Football.
“A simple tribute to the one who made Brazilian football shine. Rest in peace, Pel!”, highlighted Arena MRV on its social network.
“World football loses its biggest star. Atltico are deeply saddened by the death of Pel. Three times World Champion with Brazil, the King was elected Athlete of the Century in 1980 by the French newspaper L’Equipe, in 1999 by the International Olympic Committee, and in 2000 by FIFA,” the Minas Gerais club wrote on social media.
“Edson Arantes do Nascimento was born on October 23, 1940 in Três Coraes (MG). As a player he has accumulated records – several of which remained unbeaten 45 years after leaving the field – and titles in a brilliant career, which is intertwined with his. history of our football. Pel had been hospitalized since 29/11, when he visited hospital to re-evaluate the chemotherapy treatment for the cancer he was undergoing. He passed away this afternoon, aged 82. Our sincere condolences to his family, friends and fans. Rest in peace and thanks for everything King!”
