On Saturday afternoon, Atlético Madrid took on the successful team Girona at home at the Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid. The prerequisites for the match were that fourth-placed Atlético (58 points) chased third-placed Girona (65 points) in the table.
But the Madrid team had a nightmare start to the match.
After just four minutes, Artem Dovbyk stayed in front and gave Girona the lead with his 17th league goal of the season.
Atlético then chased an equaliser, and were rewarded after 34 minutes when Antoine Griezmann made it 1-1 from the penalty spot.
Just before the half-time break, Álvaro Morata found Ángel Correa, who made it 2-1 to Atlético before the end of the first half.
When Girona, in turn, would push for an equalizer at the beginning of the second half, they went on a slap in the face right away.
Five minutes into the match’s second act, Griezmann made the final score 3-1 with his second goal of the day.
The victory means that Atlético Madrid collect points on Girona in the La Liga table. The latter’s lead has now shrunk from seven points to four points, while Atlético are now five points ahead of fifth-placed Athletic Club and are closing in on fourth place.
