In this phase – the 1/8th finals – clubs from the same country and clubs that were already together in the same group could not yet cross each other. Benfica was the first club to come out of the pot and meet Real Madrid. So that will be a duel between Jan Vertonghen and Thibaut Courtois and Eden Hazard.
The eye-catcher is, among other things, the poster between PSG and Manchester United, especially because it will be a clash between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Another top poster is the one between Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich. Ajax has to fight it out with Inter, the Italian champion. Defending champion Chelsea must try to get past Lille.
The first legs will be played on 15, 16, 22 and 23 February. The returns are on March 8, 9, 15 and 16. The seed heads first play on displacement.
Attention: the rule about away goals no longer applies. If there is a tie after 180 minutes, extra time will follow, regardless of the number of goals at home or away.
The draw for the quarter-finals and semi-finals will be held on Friday 18 March.
The final will be played on May 28, 2022 in Saint Petersburg.
