Atlanta declares a state of emergency: protesters attack US broadcaster CNN

After rioting in protests against police violence, a state of emergency has been declared for the US city of Atlanta in the state of Georgia and other cities in the surrounding area. Around 500 members of the Georgia National Guard will be deployed to protect people and property, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp wrote on Twitter. According to media reports, Atlanta’s mayor Keisha Bottoms asked for it after violence broke out in protests on Friday following the death of the black George Floyd.

Protesters attacked, among other things, the headquarters of the broadcaster CNN. The station showed live images from its own headquarters, showing how demonstrators from outside threw objects at police officers in the entrance area of ​​the station. The website of the local broadcaster WRCB TV featured a photo of a burning car, among other things. Several police cars were also reportedly set on fire.

George Floyd, 46, died on Monday after a brutal police operation in Minneapolis, Minnesota. One of the four police officers involved in the operation was charged with murder on Friday. He is the white policeman who had his knee pressed against Floyd’s neck for several minutes. Floyd had pleaded for help several times before he passed out. Floyd was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. A video of the incident caused horror across the US. Investigations are underway against three other officers involved in the operation.

Protests also broke out in other US cities for the fourth night in a row, some of which turned into violence. In Minneapolis, thousands took to the streets despite the curfew. Protests have also been reported from New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, Louisville, and other locations. Protesters also gathered in front of the White House in Washington, marching from the White House to the Capitol. Some of them overturned barricades.
