Atici Leads in Postal Votes, Set to Make History in Basel Government Council

According to the interim results from the State Chancellery on Sunday, the former SP National Councilor and Kurdish-born catering entrepreneur Atici received 24,683 votes from postal voters in the second round of voting. The opposing candidate Urgese, who was jointly promoted by the bourgeois parties and the SVP, received 21,939 votes. The 37-year-old Grand Councilor and association official is 2,744 votes behind Atici. The right-wing councilor Eric Weber made 1,719 votes.

In the election to the regional council, Cramer leads with 36,847 votes, followed by Weber with 1,483 votes. The election of the director of education, who has been in office since 2017, to the executive board was only considered a formality. Atici, who also ran for the presidency in the first round of voting and was almost 8,000 votes behind Cramer, only wants the seat of government and thus left the field free for the LDP politician.

Winner expected to take over education department

With the election of Beat Jans (SP) to the Federal Council in December 2023, a seat on the government council and at the same time the presidium became vacant in Basel. In the first round of voting on March 3rd, no one achieved an absolute majority.

With a victory for Atici, the SP would retain its three seats in the seven-member government council, and Atici would be the first Basel government member with a migrant background.

If Urgese wins, the bourgeoisie would again have the majority in the executive branch for the first time since the general elections in 2000 and the FDP would be represented in the Basel executive branch again after security director Baschi Dürr was voted out in November 2020. The winner of the duel between the SP and FDP is expected to take over Cramer’s education department.

The final results are expected to be announced from 6 p.m.
