“We have learned that Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei has died after a violent attack by her boyfriend,” Donald Rukare told X.
Earlier this week, the Uganda Athletics Federation announced that Cheptegei had been admitted with serious injuries after being set on fire by her boyfriend. During Paris 2024, Cheptegei recently finished 44th in the Olympic marathon.
The police report states that: “Dickson Ndiema Marangach poured petrol on Cheptegei and ignited the liquid with fire. The suspect was also caught in the fire. He suffered burns over 30 percent of his body but is stable.”
