Kenyan Benson Kipruto won the Boston Marathon.
At the 125th edition of the traditional race, the 30-year-old needed 2:09:51 hours for the 42.195 kilometers and was more than six minutes behind the best time of his compatriot Geoffrey Mutai in 2011. Second was the Ethiopian Lemi Berhanu, who missed his second victory in Boston after 2016 in 2:10:37 hours. His compatriot Jemal Yimer was third, one second behind.
Fastest woman on the streets of Massachusetts was the Kenyan Diana Kipyogei in 2:24:45 hours. She relegated her compatriot and 2017 winner Edna Kiplagat to second place in 2:25:09 hours. The four-fold success for the runners from the East African runners nation was completed by Mary Ngugi in 2:25:20 hours and Monicah Ngige in 2:25:32 hours.
Last year the Boston Marathon was canceled due to the corona pandemic and this year it was moved from spring to autumn. In 2019, the Kenyan Lawrence Cherono won in 2:07:57 hours and Worknesh Degefa from Ethiopia in 2:23:31 hours.
