L’athletics seeks the show and pursues new economic-financial goals with a new revolutionary format, officially presented by World Athletics.
First edition in 2026
Il World Athletics Ultimate Championship it will be held for the first time in 2026, between 11 and 13 September, in Budapest: the aim is to crown “the best of the best” every two years. Three evenings of competitions, each lasting less than three hours, during which the athletes “will represent themselves and their national teams, wearing the colors of their country”. Sebastian Coe he declared that it will be a revolution for this sport and for all athletes: “They will be able to be admired like never before.”
Sixteen specialties
The sixteen specialties that will be present in the program have also been revealed: 100 metres, 200 metres, 400 metres, 800 metres, 1500 metres, 5000 metres, 100/110 hurdles, 400 hurdles, pole vault, high jump, jumping long jump, triple jump (women), hammer throw (men), javelin throw, 4x100m medley, 4×100 mixed. The exclusion of the shot put and discus throw stands out, as well as the 3000 steeplechase, the men’s triple jump and the women’s hammer. The objective will be to bring the best athletes to compete, including Olympic Champions, World Champions, winners of the Diamond Leagueholders of the best performances in the world, in order to reward the champion of champions (the comparison between such different events remains to be understood). The prize money is pharaonic: 10 million US dollars (around 9.6 million euros), while the winners of each specialty will receive a check for 150,000 dollars (around 144,000 euros).
