Frankfurt / Main (dpa) – The European Championship second Gina Lückenkemper sees the planned German championships on 8/9. August with reduced starter fields and without running competitions from 1500 meters critical. “In general, it is good news for athletics that the German championships in Braunschweig and other competitions will be held again,” said the 23-year-old sprinter from SCC Berlin to the German Press Agency. “Only I don’t think the DM will be comparable to previous championships.”
Finally, the long-distance athletes and obstacle runners were missing. There would also be limited starter fields. “For me, athletics also includes second and third row athletes from smaller clubs who do a great job at the grassroots,” said Lückenkemper. “If such athletes can’t start at the DM in 2020, it’s not a” real “German championship for me.”
The German Athletics Association had recently solicited understanding of the restrictions necessary in the corona crisis, which also included the exclusion of spectators. In response to criticism from athletes, the DLV had to comply with the current official regulations on infection protection measures in order to obtain a special permit. European obstacle champion Gesa Krause had also complained that she could not fight for a title in her special discipline.
