“Athletics brings together the purest values of sport”

We are celebrating, the Alcampo Scorpio 71 turns 50.

So is. And, unless the covid prevents it, we are determined to celebrate this half century of life as it deserves. For this, we want to propose a program of events that combines exhibitions in the street on athletics, sporting events dedicated to citizens, such as the Children’s Race that we have organized for 15 years or the City of Zaragoza Trophy on an indoor track. And also, street tests for citizens.

What is your essential claim?

That society know athletics through its athletes, its achievements, that this wonderful sport that is the basis of all sports be known. In addition, it is the one that brings together the purest values of sport, transferable to society, such as the value of sacrifice, personal improvement, respect for the adversary. We have a school with 300 boys and girls from 8 to 15 years old. We are proud to build those people who carry in their gene a sport like athletics and a club like the Scorpio.

How was the club born?

As a founding idea, a group of teenagers crazy about athletics decided on November 4, 1971 to create a club independent from the dominant sports structures in Zaragoza at that time: the Hípica and San Fernando. Thus, they decide to create an athletics club, just for athletics and for athletics.

They got together in November ’71, as you said, under the sign of Scorpio …

There were 42 founders, an amalgam of very different people in terms of professions, studies and personalities, but who agreed in the deepest love for athletics, which was what motivated the birth of the club. There was Pedro Pablo Fernández, athlete and coach.

Fundamental in Aragonese athletics, Pedro Pablo.

Clear. Also, Eduardo Laborda, painter; Julio Álvarez, photographer and director of Sala Spectrum; Alberto Solanas, Olympic athlete; Luis Sol, journalist; Montse Abelló, athlete; Pilar Fanlo, athlete … These are a sample of the strength and diverse personalities that made up the germ and foundation of the club, a comprehensive club, from juvenile age to veterans.

Furthermore, five decades before the creation of the Ministry of Equality, women were already playing a vital role in the club.

The woman was and is very present. Currently, the activity is divided between the Palacio de los Deportes, the ‘indoor’ symbol of the national athletics, and the tracks of the Corona de Aragón stadium at Actur. Before, the Labor University and the tracks of the University City were the main stage.

There were and are athletes of tronio …

Very good. Luis María Garriga, high jumper in Tokyo 64 and Mexico 68) …

The man who stroked the sky the day Dick Fosbury changed history.

Exact. Also Alberto Solanas, long jumper in Moscow 80; José Casabona, 400 hurdles in Moscow 80; Ester Lahoz, 4×400 in Seoul 88 and Barcelona 92; Javier Benet, decathleta in Barcelona 92 and Atlanta 96; Maite Gargallo, 20 km march in Athens 2004; María José Poves, 20-kilometer march in Beijing 2008 and London 2012; Isabel Macías, 1,500 in London 2012; Patricia Sarrapio, triple jump London 2012 and Rio 2016; and Toni Abadía, 5,000 in Rio 2016.

And there they continue.

Currently, Alcampo Scorpio 71 is one of the few clubs in the elite, in the highest category, with both teams, both male and female.

Seeing the passion with which he talks about athletics, it is obvious, but why did he get involved in this sarao?

Scorpio is an essential part of my education. I did all sports and was not typecast in any. They told me about a group of athletes at the Colegio del Salvador, and I started training under Alfredo Boné. I was then 11 years old. And until today.
