In recent weeks, there has been a lot of talk about the future of Djurgården’s IF talent Lucas Bergvall. The 17-year-old has both been seen in Barcelona, and has reportedly been on site in England, while there have been mainly reports of a settlement between Barcelona and Tottenham for the talent’s signature.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has reported that Bergvall wanted to go to Barcelona, while also writing that the deal was expected to be completed this week, and effective from July 1 this year. Romano has also stated that Barcelona’s latest bid was seven million euros, roughly SEK 79 million, as well as three million euros, equivalent to SEK 34 million, in bonuses. At the same time, Expressen has written that Tottenham was in the race, and that the transfer, regardless of the choice of club, was expected to land at around SEK 220 million – with bonuses included.
Now The Athletic journalist David Ornstein confirms that Bergvall has chosen Tottenham, and will fly out on Friday for medical tests and sign a five-year contract. According to The Athletic, the Swede is then expected to join Spurs this summer, as the clubs are said to be in full agreement on a transfer. The agreed transfer fee is stated to be ten million euros, corresponding to SEK 113 million, plus bonuses.
According to The Athletic, it is Tottenham’s Danish director Johan Lange who convinced Bergvall, as late as Thursday evening. Bergvall also visited, according to the site, the London club on Monday, for meetings with owner Daniel Levy and coach Ange Postecoglou.
According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, who now also has information that Bergvall has chosen Spurs, Tottenham Swede Dejan Kulusevski also played a role in convincing the 17-year-old to move to London. Kulusevski is said to have told about what it is like to play in Spurs, and about what it is like to work under Postecoglou’s management.
According to Spanish Relevo, Bergvall’s family also prefers that the talent lives in London, while Spurs are said to have promised a place for the promise in the A team squad for next season.
Earlier on Thursday, Djurgården’s sporting director Bosse Andersson was a guest on Fotbollskanalen’s deadline day broadcast, and then said that Bergvall will remain at the club until this summer.
Andersson also said that a potential Bergvall deal could be presented sometime in February, when the player turns 18, which he will do tomorrow, Friday.
– Lucas turns 18 tomorrow, and that is a basis for signing a longer contract. We are thus discussing a transition that will take place this summer. You don’t have to wait for anything tonight. Sometime a bit into February, I think we can present where Lucas will play football, but he will play in Djurgården until this summer, Andersson said.
Andersson did not want to speculate on whether it could be SEK 100 or 200 million for Bergvall, as previously reported in the media.

It’s good for Djurgården and also good for BP, which means it’s good for Swedish football. I’m tired of the speculation, and that’s where it affects one extremely. It can be bloody frustrating, I have to say, but I’m sitting on the answer and I’m extremely proud of the discussions we’re having. I think you will all be happy and proud if in the next few weeks we can present something.
At present, Hugo Larsson’s transfer from MFF to Eintracht Frankfurt is the largest in the history of the Allsvenskan, when the sum, according to Aftonbladet, landed at around 132 million kroner.
Bergvall has a contract with Djurgården over 2025. He has played 29 games with the “blue stripes” – after the move from IF Brommapojkarna before last season.
