Athletes with Olympic medals will maintain lifetime recognitions

Mexico City. The Official Gazette of the Federation decreed that Mexican athletes will be able to maintain their lifetime recognitions if they have obtained a medal in the Olympic Games.

A stimulus that was destined to disappear is today a guarantee with the modifications that were made to the General Law of Physical Culture and Sports. “It is great news, because with the changes they made to the law last October, the concept of this support disappeared; for obvious reasons there was a lot of concern,” said Daniel Aceves, head of the Association of Olympic Medalists.

Although the support was never interrupted, in legal terms, Conade did not have a legal basis to maintain the lifelong scholarships. With the approval, the governing body of Mexican sports “has the power to incorporate the granting of these economic stimuli into its budget.”

The amounts will be the same as they have been since this concept was incorporated in 2004. Although the Association of Olympic Medalists requested a 30 percent increase in the current fees, the truth is that the amounts to be received are: 13 thousand pesos for a gold medal, 11 thousand 500 for a silver and 10 thousand for a bronze. Conade will have the responsibility, based on inflation and the increase in the minimum wage, if the amount changes.
