Athletes protest, shops open: entrepreneur’s patience has run out

“Being able to exercise is a social necessity,” says Ronald Wouters of the NL Actief sports club sector. The industry believes that opening should and can be done. That is why there will be a demonstration in The Hague on Tuesday.

With a petition signed by about 300,000 athletes, it should once again be made clear that it cannot continue like this. “I have a lot of confidence in the new cabinet,” says Wouters. According to him, it has been amply demonstrated that sports can be done in a safe way.

The new cabinet will hold a press conference on Friday about the corona policy and the lockdown. Will there be relaxation? Some entrepreneurs do not wait, shopkeepers from Geleen already announced that they want to open on Saturday, regardless of the policy.

“Enough is enough,” they write on Facebook. Money is also being collected there to absorb possible fines. More angry entrepreneurs are now gathering on the internet, this is how this closed group of retailers now almost counts 10,000 members. Shopkeepers from Amsterdam started a petition.

‘People want to fit’

The shoe store of Jenke Haverhals in Zwanenburg is also ‘open as usual’, he tells RTL Z. “We can keep our distance here, it is safer here than in a supermarket,” said the entrepreneur. “People want to fit, taste, smell.”

According to Haverhals, the company adheres to hygiene rules and no fines have been handed out. “We need all the turnover and the compensation is a sham,” he says. That’s why he continues as he always did.

Pay for groceries

Several restaurants and cafes in Goes also want to open, they say to the Provinciale Zeeuwse Courant (PZC). According to the trade organization Koninklijke Horeca Nederland (KHN), this is also possible in a responsible way.

Some hairdressers also cut through, according to a tour of RTL Nieuws. Hairdresser Petra Scholten said she had no other choice: “You still want to be able to pay for your groceries.”

Retailers’ association Inretail therefore calls on the Netherlands to ‘get out of the break’. Entrepreneurial associations VNO-NCW and MKB Nederland are joining forces.

“The lockdown can no longer be done,” they wrote in a statement on Tuesday. As far as they are concerned, policy should focus on opening the economy after Friday.
