ATHEX: Mid-caps take bourse index higher

Despite the drop of banks stocks, which left the blue chip index unchanged on the day, the benchmark of the Greek stock market posted a minor increase on Wednesday on the back of the notable rise recorded by mid-caps. The market saw a significant majority of rising stocks in this fourth straight day of price growth, and a decline in the day’s trading volume.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 1,196.48 points, adding 0.28% to Tuesday’s 1,193.10 points. The large-cap FTSE-25 index stayed put at 2,927.62 points, but mid-caps expanded 1.23%.

The banks index contracted 0.91%, as Eurobank dropped 1.75%, Alpha gave up 0.71% and National ended 0.67% lower, while Piraeus grabbed 0.07%. Helleniq Energy soared 5.34%, Mytilineos earned 1.49% and Terna Energy collected 1.27%, as GEK Terna declined 0.76% and Aegean Airlines parted with 0.58%.

In total 61 stocks posted gains, 38 recorded losses and 19 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 57.7 million euros, down from Tuesday’s €80.8 million.

In Nicosia, the general index of the Cyprus Stock Exchange increased 0.23% to close at 126.71 points.
