Atelier 36 Bastille : Franco Fontana : America

Franco Fontana exhibits at theWorkshop 36 Bastille. We knew of Franco Fontana his landscapes or his seascapes, in which he made a work of composition, an ample and colourist composition where the graphic design prevailed and whose book Skyline appeared in 1978 as an outcome. The subject of American metropolises accompanied by their inevitable urban tumult seemed a priori to go against the coherence of his earlier work of beautiful lines and neat chromatic areas. What was he going to look for in the great American metropolises during his various trips from 1985 to 2001. He loved to confront his Italianness, his references to metaphysics with the works of the great American masters Weston, Walker Evans and the others. “During my various stays in the USA, I recognized my idea of the urban landscape, I found what was already in me and I gathered what I had sown for a long time”.

During an exhibition, around thirty original vintages of this American journey will be exhibited and put on sale in this new place dedicated to living photography. They accompany the book published by Contrejour editions, fifty of which include for the occasion a print by the great Italian photographer who is still alive and well.

Thanks to Claude Nori who chose the images!
