ATB, Joy Denalane and Malik Harris come to the Bochum Music Summer, Bochum Marketing GmbH, press release

On the last weekend in August, the city center resounds: the Bochum Music Summer is back! The 14th edition of the three-day festival takes place from August 26th to 28th and again has numerous highlights in store. Several stages and venues are spread across the city center. This time, organizer Bochum Marketing was able to win local hero ATB, soul legend Joy Denalane and shooting star Malik Harris as headliners. In addition to the music, there will again be a colorful programme, from the street food corner to a handicraft market and the wine festival. And on August 26th, RathausClubbing will celebrate its premiere.

The summer of music will be officially opened by Lord Mayor Thomas Eiskirch and Mario Schiefelbein, Managing Director of Bochum Marketing GmbH. On Friday, August 26, they will give the starting signal at 7 p.m. on the Moritz-Fiege stage at Dr.-Ruer-Platz. Afterwards, Joy Denalane can be admired on the same stage from 7.30 p.m. Born in Berlin, she released the album “Let Yourself Be Loved” on the US label Motown in September 2020, which is equal parts self-assertion, genealogical research and homage to the great soul classics. She is now bringing this soul to Bochum.

Local hero Andre Tanneberger, better known as ATB, will be doing the honors on Saturday from 9 p.m. in the Stadtwerke Lounge. The DJ and music producer had to vacate his usual place on Friday because he was still at the Creamfields Festival in Manchester that day. The world-famous music star ATB didn’t want to do without the performance in his home country. Shooting star Malik Harris will also appear on the same day, he will be playing on the Moritz Fiege stage on Saturday from 9:30 p.m. His first songs were already hits on Spotify, and the 24-year-old became known through his victory this year in the German preliminary round and his performance with the song “Rockstars” at the Eurovision Song Contest. Since then it has been played all over Germany’s radio stations. Harris is musically extremely talented, can play several instruments and therefore often doesn’t need a band – he creates the sounds himself using a loop station.

Several big stages in the city center

More than 1,000 artists are expected in Bochum over the weekend. They appear on several major stages and at other venues. The largest stage is presented by the Moritz Fiege private brewery and is located on Dr.-Ruer-Platz. Other stages can be found along the boulevard. The Winzerfest stage is on the corner of Massenbergstraße and Hellweg. The VBW Summerstage is located at the Platz des Kuhhirtens, which exudes a Caribbean flair with deckchairs and palm trees. The Stadtwerke Lounge is located on the corner of Kortumstrasse and Bongardstrasse. Tommy Finke runs the living room stage in Harmoniestraße with his well-known label “Retter des Rock”. The stage at Konrad-Adenauer-Platz in the Bermuda3Eck is also the venue for the music summer. And the advertising community “Dein Shopping Station” is again the namesake of a stage in Bochum’s main train station.

Even more venues

Other venues of the music summer are the Tanztreff in the churchyard of the Pauluskirche, the Pauluskirche itself and two stepping stones in Huestraße, which are used by street artists of all stripes. All concerts are free and take place outdoors.

Brisk start on Friday

The range of musical styles is large, from classical to jazz to electronic music. Visitors can find something suitable at any time from August 26th to 28th and, thanks to the short distances, can stroll from stage to stage. The Bergmann & Bartkowski duo, who are rearranging well-known film music in the show called “The Movie Trip”, are eagerly awaited – to be seen on Friday at 9:30 p.m. on the Moritz-Fiege stage. At the same time DJ Klaus Fiehe entertained the audience of the Stadtwerke Lounge in the style of his well-known show at 1LIVE. The winner of the Bochum singer and songwriter contest can also be seen on Friday: The Janou duo will be performing at the VBW Summerstage from 8.30 p.m., followed by the rock band King of Fruits from 10 p.m., who won the slot at the “Campus Ruhrcomer” competition to have.

Ukrainian artists on Saturday

Musical guests from Ukraine will present themselves on Saturday: Svitlana Novak and Elizaveta Radchenk, both of whom have received various music awards, had to flee from the war and have been living in Bochum since March 2022. The duo will perform at the VBW Summerstage am Kuhhirten on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Ukrainian artist Alona will follow at 2 p.m. The Bochum-Donezk society is also represented at the music summer and can be found on the boulevard with a tombola. Also on Saturday will be the UK quartet from Tatort Jazz on the Winzerfest stage (7.30 p.m.) and Tommy Finke on the living room stage (8 p.m.). Mike Litt, also known as “the loneliest DJ in the world”, will be the heater for ATB in the Stadtwerke Lounge on Saturday from 7 p.m. And at 8.30 p.m. there will be a real insider tip with Marlon Hammer on the Moritz Fiege stage.

atmosphere at the end

On Sunday, the Bochum Music School, one of the partners of the music summer alongside the Bochum Music Office and several choirs, will take over the Moritz Fiege stage until the afternoon hours, coupled with several hands-on drumming activities. Also worth seeing are New Polish Tunes by Kosmopolen, which will bring music from Poland to the VBW Summerstage from 1:45 p.m. Oliver Korthals, co-founder and DJ of Hamburg’s Mojo Club, and Ralf Ilgner, aka Gärtner der Lüste, ensure a nice conclusion from 4.30 p.m. in the Stadtwerke Lounge. If you’d rather watch than listen: On Sunday, Tango Fuego invites you to dance together on the impulse stage at the KAP, which is otherwise played by a DJ team. There will also be more dance performances at various venues over the weekend.

Children’s program and Sunday shopping

Sunday is family day. Various dance events for children take place around the Pauluskirche. In addition, the shops in the city center can be visited, because the trade invites you to Sunday shopping from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Street food and wine festival

In addition to the music, there will be many other activities in downtown Bochum from August 26th to 28th. An arts and crafts market around the spherical fountain on Harmoniestraße invites you to browse. In the Streetfood Corner on Harmoniestraße there are all kinds of delicious food and drinks. Visitors to the boulevard can once again indulge their taste buds at the wine festival. Selected wine producers from Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse and Rheinhessen recommend their wines, sparkling wines and specialties here. Whether fruity, mineral, tart or mild – the variety of pleasures is just as great as the wines offered by the winegrowers. Freshly tapped beer in the event area is available from the Moritz Fiege private brewery. The summer of music will be accompanied by Radio Bochum, which will once again set up its glass studio on the boulevard.

RathausClubbing

The RathausClubbing takes place for the first time parallel to the Bochum Music Summer. The premiere will take place on August 26 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Three different program items ensure diverse entertainment. Tickets are required for the concert of around 100 singers starting at 9 p.m. in the inner courtyard of the town hall. These will be available from Saturday, August 13th at the Bochum Tourist Info (Huestrasse 9, 44787 Bochum) for five euros. The proceeds from ticket sales benefit the Bochum-Donezk Society. With the RathausClubbing project, which is a core activity of the Bochum Strategy 2030 and is being implemented jointly by the cultural office of the city of Bochum and Bochum Marketing, a new live culture hotspot is being created in the city centre. Ideas for the new format have been sought since April. And so the town hall will appear in a new light on this day, whether as a club, concert venue, performance stage or theater venue. After the start on August 26, three further evening events are planned in September, October and November. The city of Bochum will announce further information on RathausClubbing before the event.

relocation of the market

Due to the music summer, the weekly market on Dr.-Ruer-Platz has to move on Friday and can be found on Buddenbergplatz at the main station instead. Information about Bochum’s weekly markets is available online at www.bochum-tourismus.de/wochenmarkt.
