Atalanta is no longer a traveler team in the Champions League

Bergamo

Atalanta will no longer be a traveler team in Champions League like last season. La Dea has been permitted by UEFA to use their headquarters, Gewiss Stadium.

This assurance was obtained after UEFA gave a positive assessment when reviewing the feasibility of Gewiss Stadium. Even though they were allowed to use their headquarters in the 2020/2021 Champions League, Atalanta were still advised by UEFA to make some improvements in their home.

“The club would like to announce that the two days of UEFA’s visit to Gewiss Stadium have brought a positive response,” said Atalanta’s official statement. Football Italia.

“This visit shows that we still need some improvements to be made in the next few weeks. After that, Atalanta can play their 2020-21 Champions League home matches at Gewiss Stadium,” the statement continued.

Atalanta had previously been unable to play at Gewiss Stadium when competing in European competitions in the last two seasons. This happened after the stadium with a capacity of 21,300 had to be renovated because it was deemed not meeting UEFA standards.

This condition forced Atalanta to become a traveler team. In the 2018/2019 season, they had to use Sassuolo’s home, Mapei Stadium, when playing in the Europa League.

While last season, Atalanta played a home match in the Champions League event at San Siro, Milan, which is 60 km from Bergamo. Even so, this did not prevent Giampiero Gasperini’s troops from making a surprise by advancing to the quarter-finals.

Atalanta did appear extraordinary last season. In Serie A, they were able to finish in third place with the status of the most fertile team after scoring 98 goals. This result is what led them back to the Champions League this season.

The news of being able to play Atalanta at Gewiss Stadium in this season’s Champions League was warmly welcomed by their president, Antonio Percassi. According to him, this is a dream come true.

“It can be said that this is very satisfying and another dream has come true,” said President Antonio Percassi.

“We really care about this. Gewiss Stadium, finally finished renovating as recommended by UEFA. You will also be able to host a Champions League match. Fantastic!”
