Long-range missiles ATACMS (Army Tactical Missile System) sent in utmost secrecy to Ukraine by the government of USA. In fact, as an American official stated, the missiles were already used a few days ago in the field, for the bombing of a Russian military airport on the Crimean peninsula in the early hours of April 17.
These new missiles provide Ukraine with the ability to hit at almost twice the distance, since they have a range of up to 300 kmcompared to the previous, medium-range version of the weapon they had received from the US last October.
They are part of a $300 million military aid package for Ukraine approved by the US president Joe Biden on March 12, the same official said, speaking on condition of anonymity, without specifying the number of missiles delivered.
Since the beginning of the war Ukraine has been persistently asking the US for ATACMS missiles, but Washington has been hesitant due to concerns that Kiev would use them to strike deep inside Russia. However, according to international media, the reason for the U.S. conversion is likely the growing Russian aggression.
THE tradition of long-range missiles in Ukraine now raises concerns of a further escalation of the conflict, as Russia has signaled that it will push enemy forces further into Ukrainian territory and expand what it calls a “neutral zone” if Kiev receives ATACMS missiles from USA.
