At what age should men be screened for prostate cancer? This is the doctor’s explanation

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.TV – Prostate cancer symptoms include changes in urination patterns, difficulty emptying the bladder, pain and discomfort in the penis, prostate enlargement, and erectile dysfunction.

Cancer cells can metastasize or spread to organs or tissues around the prostate, such as lymph nodes, bones or other organs, which can be life-threatening.

For this reason, urology specialist Dr. Andika Afriansyah, SpU, Sub.SpFFN(K) reminded that men who have reached the age of 45 years must undergo prostate cancer screening to prevent future pregnancy.

“A man should start screening at the age of 45 if he has a family history of prostate cancer, but if he does not have a family history of prostate cancer, he can start screening at the age of 50,” said Dr. Andika mentioned Antara, Tuesday (1/10/2024)

Andika continued, prostate cancer is very rare in men under the age of 50 years.

On the other hand, cancer that causes male reproductive dysfunction is very common in men aged 50 years and older.

For this reason, Andika continued, an examination at age 45 is highly recommended if you have a family history of prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer screening is now very easy too, with different prices.

A test called Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) is now available in many health facilities.

Andika recommends doing this test every year or two.

“Advanced prostate cancer can cause death, but it is very treatable as long as it is caught in the early stages. “But the most important thing here is prevention, by screening for prostate cancer, checking PSA, once every year or two,” said Andika.

Early detection plays an important role in treating prostate cancer.

Because it can increase the chances of recovery and reduce the risk of more serious problems.
