Over 1,500 assessments regarding vitamin D deficiency were performed at the Timisoara County Hospital in 2021. Investigations are being conducted under the National Vitamin D Status Assessment Program.
Vitamin D is formed naturally in the skin when the body is exposed to the sun, but there are also periods when the exposure is insufficient, such as the winter months.
“In the absence of sun exposure, especially in the winter months, the body may develop a vitamin D deficiency, a deficiency that brings with it quite serious negative consequences. Vitamin D is important not only in regulating calcium metabolism, but also for immunity, respectively for defense against infections and in increasing muscle strength. Vitamin D is essential, especially to prevent serious illness. Maybe a regular laboratory investigation helps us to find the real need of the body and complete the dosage needed for optimal health. A first warning sign for a vitamin D deficiency would be prolonged fatigue, spasms and muscle contractions. “explained Prof. Dr. Mihaela Vlad, coordinator of the Endocrinology department of SCJUT.
Over time, the lack causes various ailments of the body that are associated with diseases of the vital organs. The assessment of vitamin D status in the body is done using a simple procedure for the patient. This is a lab test that your family doctor or specialist recommends. Depending on the outcome, the patient receives recommendations. At the level of the County Hospital from Timișoara, the National Program for Assessing the Status of Vitamin D is carried out. Basically, the serum level of 25-OH vitamin D is determined for the people who fall into the groups at risk. These are patients with kidney disease, endocrine disorders, autoimmune diseases, neoplasms, nutritional disorders, lung disease or liver disease.
„The program is a prophylaxis program, it only aims to detect vitamin D deficiency, it is not a program for medical control or therapy. SCJUT made the first determination in 2019, immediately after its initiation and since then we apply, year after year, the investigation procedure. At the level of 2021, around 1,500 assessments for vitamin D deficiency were made within SCJUT. Practically, the patients consulted and who are part of the risk groups established by the Ministry of Health can benefit, if they wish, from this determination ”informs the doctor.
Vitamin D is fat-soluble, but despite its name, it is actually a prohormone, which is a precursor to a hormone.
