The students of the Primary School of Agia Marina Ioannina had the opportunity to get to know the Acropolis, the Parthenon and Ancient Athens in the time of Pericles.
Through the pioneering program “History through gaming project” the children learned a lot and had the opportunity to tour the city, using augmented reality, while one of the impressive elements were the dialogues in Ancient Greek that they had the opportunity to listen to .
The initiator of the program, Michalis Mertzianidis, and the teachers of the School, Christos Gogolos and Irini Stalika, collaborated to offer the children a unique experience.
The “History through gaming project” was created in 2015, by the professor of Physical Education and Sports, Mr. Michalis Mertzianidis (who, by the way, was also awarded the European Fair Play Award 2016 by the Olympic Committees, for another sport-game for Primary School children , the Run and Out), in an effort for the students of the 10th Primary School of Ioannina, to learn History from a different perspective, effectively entering the era they are learning, with means of augmented reality.
The video game series “Assassin’s Creed” was used and the first groups of children dealt with piracy, the French revolution and the industrial revolution in England during the era of Queen Victoria.
The whole program was enriched with lessons in music, art, etc. and concluded in June 2016 with a seminar on video games, for parents and children.
Since then the program has been enriched and continues to be enriched with other eras (Ancient Greece, Ancient Egypt, etc.)
The publishing company of the video game, Ubisoft, was informed about the whole program and decided to help teachers and students in turn by creating the “Discovery Tour”, a purely educational program embedded in each of its games.
Michalis Mertzianidis is also an honorary admin on the world team of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, which deals with Ancient Greece.
The “History through gaming project”, as well as Run and Out, are under the auspices of ETHNOA.
