At the New York Philharmonic, concerts will resume in September

The institution has announced a reduced program of 73 concerts for the 2021-2022 season. In 2020-2021, the 103 concerts had been canceled.

The New York Philharmonic will resume its subscriber-only shows in September, after an unprecedented 18-month hiatus. According to Associated Press , the institution presented a reduced program of 78 concerts. The orchestra said on Tuesday that the season would begin on September 17, with a concert hosted by New York Philharmonic Music Director Jaap van Zweden. Pianist Daniil Trifonov will perform there Within Her Arms, d’Anna Clyne, Quiet City d’Aaron Copland, Antifonys for Chamber Orchestra by George Walker or the Piano Concerto Number 4 de Beethoven.

This concert, first event «normal» of the orchestra since March 10, 2020, will inaugurate a series of 50 performances in the Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, with a capacity of just over a thousand seats. This room, which is usually dedicated to chamber music and recitals, will be used during the work carried out in the David Geffen room, where the orchestra plays. In addition, 28 concerts will take place at the Rose Theater, with a capacity of 1233 seats, and 4 at Carnegie Hall, which hosted the orchestra from 1891 to 1962. During this season, shows will be scheduled on Sunday morning, a first since 1964-65. No intermission will be scheduled, at least until December.

Countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo will be the artist in residence at the New York Philharmonic. From January 27-29, he will share the bill with artist Justin Vivian Bond. On February 3 and 5, he will sing as part of a program including the world premiere of Summer nights, a work usually performed by mezzo-sopranos, this time reimagined with new texts. Gustavo Dudamel, new musical director of the Paris Opera, will lead the programs from March 9 to 20, 2022.

The Geffen Hall, which has hosted the Philharmonie since 1962, is undergoing a renovation at a cost of 550 million dollars (454 million euros). The places should reopen in the fall of 2022, with a capacity of less than 2,200 places compared to 2,738 previously. The ranks in the orchestra will be reduced from 43 to 33, and the stage advanced by 7.5 meters to allow the creation of seven rows encircling the orchestra.

The health crisis had led to the cancellation of the last 27 shows reserved for subscribers for the 2019-2020 season, as well as six other concerts. During the 2020-2021 vintage, the entire season was purely and simply canceled. The 103 concerts reserved for subscribers, as well as 16 other concerts, tours and concerts devoted to young audiences, had been canceled.
