One of the most notoriously party-happy rock stars of all time says he has exchanged most of the drugs for food and sleep.

As a frontman in the bands The Libertines and Babyshambles, Pete Doherty (42) became a much talked about artist, especially in the period 2006–2007.

Doherty’s artistic work was primarily popular in his home country, the United Kingdom.

However, his partying habits – and perpetual round dancing with the police and the judiciary as a result – gave him international fame as one of the most scandal-ridden rock stars ever.

Doherty was in a love affair with model star Kate Moss when things were at their worst, and became no less famous for it.

– Love sleep

Now, however, it seems that Doherty has changed his lifestyle a bit, even though it is barely a year and a half since he was arrested in a suburb of Paris, for possession of cocaine.

The British newspaper The Sun recently published photos of him taken in the rural idyllic French small town of Étretat, out for a walk with his girlfriend Katia De Vidas and their dog.

In the wake of the pictures have The Sun got Doherty talking.

According to the newspaper, he says that he mostly stays away from drugs now, and that sleep and toast with French cheese are his new “guilty pleasures”.

– For years I was up for five or six days in a row, then I slept for a day. Now I love sleep. At the moment I’m pretty clean. “I quit heroin and ketamine,” Doherty told The Sun.

The 42-year-old further says that he drinks alcohol, albeit in moderate amounts.

– I like to experiment, make cocktails with champagne, some rum, orange juice. Now I sound like an alcoholic, but I’m not – I like a good glass of water.

Life in Normandy is also far from another temptation he could have imagined:

– I would like to have a Big Mac, but can’t get it. The nearest McDonalds is 40 minutes away, he says according to the newspaper.

Solid breakfast

In 2018, there was also attention around Doherty’s newfound eating habits.

Then he stopped by Dalby Cafe in the British small town of Margate. The café has a fixed offer of a 4000-calorie megaversion of English breakfast – which is free if you get rubbish and stubble.

Doherty fixed the steak, and was immortalized by the proprietor:

In Doherty’s new band, Peter Doherty & The Puta Madres, his girlfriend Katia De Vidas is part of the crew, on piano and keyboard. The group has so far only left cautious traces behind.

However, when Doherty brushes the dust off The Libertines, they draw tens of thousands of spectators to lucrative festival concerts in their home country. The band last toured at the end of 2019.

That same year, he told The Guardian that “part of him” wanted to be drug-free, to get in better contact with his own feelings.

– I would be a resource! I would have money and self-esteem and clean hands.
