At the age of 78, theater playwright and pedagogue Miroslav Plešák died suddenly today

In the 1960s, he co-founded the magazine Index, and since the 1970s he has focused mainly on theater dramaturgy, and after the fall of communist totalitarianism, also on pedagogical work at the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts (JAMU) and other universities. JAMU spokesman Luboš Mareček informed about Plešák’s death today.

Plešák was born in 1943 in Bzenec in the Hodonín region. He studied theater science and the Czech language. For most of the 70’s and 80’s he worked as a dramaturg of the theater in Zlín, later as a dramaturg of the National Theater in Brno. He has collaborated with a number of acclaimed directors, for example in Brno with Zdeněk Kaloč on a cycle of dramatizations of Dostoevsky and Zbyněk Srba on productions of Czech classics. From 2003 to 2006 he was the artistic director of the Municipal Theater in Zlín.

Plešák has been working at the Brno Theater Faculty since 1990, mainly as a teacher of acting and later dramaturgy. He was a long-time vice-rector of JAMU. He edited some publications published by the Brno Academy. In 2011, he received the Brno City Award for his contribution to Brno journalism.

He worked as a playwright at the Zlín Theater for 17 seasons, from 1972 to 1989. “He is signed to more than a hundred productions and is credited with the extraordinary results that the Zlín scene has achieved in this period. From 2003 to 2008 he was the artistic director. We are grateful to him for Studio Z, for the large number of personalities he brought to Zlín, he was behind the famous trip with the Death of Hippodamia to Lviv, but also for the festival to Lisbon with the production War between Rosemary and Marjoram, he opened the way for cycles of stage readings, “said today the Zlín theater on its own facebook.

“He repeatedly spoke about the fact that the creative stages in Zlín are his heart’s business. He regularly brought JAMU students to our festival Setkání Stretnutie i Zaráz, he missed almost no premiere. He had an extraordinary respect for tradition, but also courage and openness to experiment. It was a real and at the same time unpretentious memory of our theater. He never stopped and will never stop being ours, from Zlín, “said the theater.
