Evans triumphed at the Games in Mexico on Thursday and was the first person to break the 44-second mark on this track. At the head of the historical charts, the time of 43.86 seconds was maintained for twenty years before it was surpassed by another American Harry “Butch” Reynolds. At the same Olympics, Evans also took part in the relay triumph in the world record, which lasted for over two decades.

He also became the American champion five times in the 400-meter run. In addition to the domestic Athletic Hall of Fame, where he was inducted in 1983, Evans was a member of the National Olympic Hall of Fame. After the end of his career, he trained sprinters in a total of twenty countries around the world.
