“Rusalka” is a Bulgarian seaside resort located in the territory of the village of Sveti Nikola and in the unique nature reserve “Bird’s Bay” (also known as Tauk Liman and Nanevska Tuzla) to the north of Cape Kaliakra. It is located 20 km east of Kavarna, 35 km from Balchik and 80 km from Varna.
The holiday village, later called the “Mermaid” holiday club, was created in 1968, based on the French model of the “Mediterranean Club”.
The resort is known for its incised rocky coast, sheltered sandbars, centuries-old oaks and diversity of flora and fauna. Near the resort there are mineral springs with a temperature of 32 degrees.
Vacation Club
Numerous archaeological monuments, the oldest of which are from 8,000 years ago, turn the “Mermaid” coast into an archaeological reserve. In the reserve there are fortresses from Antiquity and the Middle Ages, rock tombs, caves, sacrificial stones and others.
In the holiday club there are tennis courts, volleyball and mini football fields, a gymnasium, a yacht club. The complex offers horse riding and a diving school.
Around the end of the 1960s, the French tourist company “Mediterranean” decided to invest in the creation of a closed tourist complex along our Black Sea coast. This investment resulted in the already accessible to all “Mermaid” complex, which to this day can be defined as one of the holistic architectural interventions ever made along our coast, writes stroiinfo.com.
The complex was created in contrast to the rapidly developing urban planning projects such as Sunny Beach and Golden Sands, and for its time it became one of the most luxurious resorts on the native coast.
French investment
Initially, the French investment was allocated a plot of land behind the well-known “Kuban” hotel in Sunny Beach. Subsequently, the decision was made to move the complex to a new, more secluded location, away from the noise and eyes of the ‘ordinary’ state tourist.
It is located 80 km northeast of Varna, in the immediate vicinity of “Bird Bay”, also known as “Tauk Liman”. The area is a protected area with a diverse rocky landscape and rich flora and fauna. Until 1968 it was completely wild and undeveloped, and the resort was the first architectural intervention in the protected area.
In contrast to the typical seaside resort town, clearly planned town planning schemes and large hotel buildings, “Mermaid” appears as the opposite of mass tourism at the time. The complex offers privacy, and access to it can certainly be described as elite.
All inclusive
Based on the fact that the complex is mainly a French investment, we can assume that a large part of those vacationing there were Western Europeans. And the only Bulgarians who had the opportunity to visit the complex were those who could pay for a holiday in dollars.
According to unofficial information, for about 11 dollars per day, the guests had access to the only “all inclusive” in the country, including all services and entertainment offered in the complex. From beach fun, sports activities and cultural programs, to unlimited consumption of food and drinks.
In 1999 the former privatization fund “AKB Fores”, renamed to “AKB Corporation”, buys the holiday village “Rusalka” at an auction for 2.01 mln. dollar.
