In her speech at the gala evening marking the 30th anniversary of the establishment of independent Slovakia, the President called for unity and drew attention to the negative consequences of conflicts and the division of society. “Celebrating the anniversary of our statehood is an opportunity to see how politicians contribute to its future. The threat is not difference itself, but how we deal with it,” she said.
About conflicts
“Looking back at our modern history clearly says that nothing positive can be built on the division of society, hatred and malice. That, apart from short-term political gains, nothing worthwhile will come of it,” Zuzana stressed. Čaputová.
He identified as important how political representation deals with a divided society: whether it is in the interests of mitigating disputes and conducting dialogue, or vice versa.
He called for the coming independence year to be filled with actions that build on the best we’ve been able to achieve.
“Let’s avoid mistakes from which we could have grown a long time ago, including political conflicts,” he appealed to the head of state and urged us to focus on what we are creating together. “This can also be our contribution to Slovakia, which history will also evaluate as a manifestation of our maturity”.
Speaking of results
Čaputová concluded that although the 30 years of our independence have been filled with many events, important ones from a long-term perspective come to the fore during retrospective assessment.
He identified as essential that Slovakia be part of free and equal nations, that it has built the institutions necessary for the functioning of a sovereign state.
It highlighted membership of the EU, Eurozone, Schengen and NATO.
“We fought hard battles for the character of the state, for our belonging to the West, for reforms, for the dignity of life. After all, history itself chooses and honors those who took the side of humanity, progress and education. Because they have contributed to the development of the republic and the well-being of its citizens,” he said. (pay)
