At Neuhof, a former military hospital of 2.3 hectares is about to be completely transformed

There are many historic buildings in Strasbourg which are not occupied or almost neglected, despite having a rich historical and cultural heritage. This is why the news that we are announcing to you today is encouraging: the former Lyautey military hospital, located in the Neuhof district, will be converted by the Eurometropolis, within a rather nice project. We tell you more.

The little story of the hospital

When walking along the Allée du Neuhof, heading towards the Espace Django, we pass in front of a huge complex with barbed wire around, and we wonder what its history was. A huge place, full of mysteries. We go to rue des Cannoniers, the gate is open, but the place is abandoned – the operations having ended in 1998, as a sign indicates to us. The time to take a few photos, we realize that the gate closes automatically and we quickly leave the premises, as if we were not invited.

In reality, this place of more than two hectares bears the name of Lyautey hospital. Formerly artillery barracks dating from 1907, it later became a military hospital, then a university. In 2008, the place was decommissioned from its military functions and was able to become, at times, an emergency accommodation center. Since 2015, it has been the subject of an acquisition and rehabilitation process by the Eurometropolis. A project that could take several forms.

One project, three objectives

However, it seems that the project has taken its final form. On February 18, the Etablissement Public Foncier d’Alsace (EPFA) signed the deed of acquisition with the Ministry of the Armed Forces. What it means ? EPFA now becomes the owner of the building and is tasked by the Eurometropolis with carrying out the first deconstruction and soil remediation work. All in order to best prepare the place and its various buildings for the projects the Eurometropolis has.

There are three of these:

  • It will first host a brand new college for the Neuhof. The latter will be supported by the Collectivité européenne d’Alsace (CEA), which we presented to you here, and will revolve around an educational project on the subject of science.
  • Ensuite, the building of honor will be rehabilitated, in an approach ” transitional town planning and activation of a third place According to the press release on this subject. Lots of words but little concrete. To be continued.
  • Finally, ” develop new public spaces by the City and Eurometropolis of Strasbourg“. Here, we are talking about a public garden as well as a path for soft travel.

Finally, it should be noted that, after the end of the preliminary work, the EPFA will transfer the rights to the site either to the Eurometropolis or to the CEA.

It is therefore a historic Strasbourg building that will be rehabilitated in the weeks, months and years to come. A nice project with several ambitions, carried with unity by the community and the CEA. Now see what it will give, since the seemingly stylish ads we know. Concrete achievements are expected.
