More and more flights scheduled for Monday at Brussels Airport are being cancelled. At the moment this concerns about 65 percent of the flights, and that percentage will increase. Airport manager Brussels Airport Company is once again calling on departing passengers to rebook their journeys, because there is a threat of long queues – up to 8 hours – at the security screening.

The expected problems are the result of the national day of action of the trade unions for purchasing power, with a large demonstration in Brussels. Various airport companies, such as G4S security personnel and baggage handlers, will be on strike as a result of the action day. “As a result, waiting times of up to 8 hours are expected at the security screening at Brussels Airport on Monday,” the airport manager said on Saturday. “The current situation means that many passengers will miss their flights and will be stranded at the airport until Tuesday morning.”

On the one hand, the airport manager is therefore again calling on passengers not to depart on Monday if possible and to rebook their flight. On the other hand, there is consultation with the airlines to cancel as many flights as possible. About half of the flights had already been canceled on Friday, “and now we are at about 65 percent,” said airport spokeswoman Ihsane Chioua Lekhli. That number will continue to rise. Passengers are advised to check their airline’s website, “because many last minute cancellations are still expected”.
At Brussels Airlines, the largest player at the airport, no additional flights will be canceled for the time being, says spokeswoman Kim Daenen. The airline had previously announced that it would cancel more than half of its flights, but that is normally the case. Brussels Airlines asks travelers who still fly on Monday to be at the airport at least 3 hours in advance and to travel with hand luggage only.

Anyone who has to take the plane at Zaventem airport on Monday will be advised to bring food and drinks and, if necessary, his or her medication. At the same time, there is the advice not to come to the airport extra early, but “two hours in advance for a flight within the Schengen zone and three hours in advance for a non-Schengen flight”.
