At least ten mountaineers have died in Iran after heavy snowfall and a snowstorm. Iranian media report that several climbers are still missing. It would be at least seven more mountaineers. People are also missing at sea.
The victims fell in the Alborz mountain area north of the capital Tehran. The mountaineers may have died as a result of avalanches. One victim was initially rescued, but later died in hospital. Nine others died on the spot.
Numerous roads have been closed in recent days due to the winter weather in Iran.
There are also problems at sea. A search is underway for seven crew members of an Iranian transport that capsized in the Persian Gulf on Friday.
“We are trying to find the missing by deploying all of our facilities and manpower. We are informing passing ships, as well as the rescue forces of Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan,” said a representative of the Iranian regional navy.
