At least six people lost their lives when part of a glacier came loose and crashed into a group of hikers in the Italian Alps, according to Italian emergency services.

The Italian newspaper the Republic reports late Sunday night that ten people are injured. Two of these are seriously injured. In addition, 16 people are still missing.

The rescue crews told the newspaper that there is little chance that it will be overwhelming among the missing.

Aftenposten was in contact with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at 6.30 pm. They have no information to suggest that Norwegians were involved in the accident.

At least five helicopters and rescue dogs participated in a search in the area around Mount Marmolada.

La Republica writes that 18 hikers were rescued by the rescue crews.

Heat wave

Marmolada is located in the Dolomites mountain range, in the border area between the provinces of Trentino and Veneto. With its 3,300 meters above sea level, the mountain is the highest peak in the mountain range.

It is unclear what triggered the landslide. The intense heat wave that has hit Italy since the end of June may be a factor. On Saturday, a heat record was measured at the top of the mountain: 10 degrees Celsius.

– We heard a loud noise. Then a landslide of snow and ice came down the mountainside at high speed. This is how an eyewitness describes the landslide to the Italian newspaper The Republic.

There is still a great risk of landslides in the area. Rescue crews in helicopters circulate over the area in search of missing persons.

Several Twitter videos show the landslide.
