At least six people have been killed in a shooting in the California capital of Sacramento. Another nine people were injured. Much is still unclear about the cause.
The shots were fired early this morning Dutch time in the center of the city. There are many cafes and restaurants in that part and it was still busy on the street.
It is unknown if the perpetrator has already been overpowered. Police have closed several streets in the area.
19,000 deaths in a year
Gun violence is a persistent problem in the US. In 2020 alone, more than 19,000 people were shot dead in the country: an average of 53 per day. This is evident from figures from the Gun Violence Archive.
