Unknown armed persons attacked a private school in Cameroon on Saturday and killed at least six children. At least six children were taken to hospital seriously injured. The victims were between 12 and 14 years old.
The incident happened in the city of Kumba. The attackers, dressed in civilian clothes, arrived on motorcycles in the middle of the day. According to witnesses, they would have entered the school and immediately opened fire on the children.
The reason for the attack is still unclear. No one has claimed it yet. The attack may be linked to a conflict raging in southwestern Cameroon, but this is not yet clear.
The region where this happened, southwestern English-speaking Meme department, has been unsettled for some time. Local separatists want to separate the region from Cameroon and establish an independent state, Ambazonia.
Hundreds have been killed and thousands have fled as a result of the struggle for independence. Local authorities blame the separatists, but separatists say they condemn the attack. However, this does not have to say anything, because the separatists are splintered into different groups.
