At least seven tourists have died and 12 others have been injured in an avalanche in Sikkim’s Nathula area. As many as 20 people have been rescued so far. The avalanche occurred near the 15th milestone on Jawaharlal Nehru Marg. Nathula Pass is situated on the border with China and is a major tourist destination. The road was blocked because of snow from Nathu La, which stranded 350 people and 80 vehicles. Officials say that the road has since been opened. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have expressed their condolences.
