At least one dead and several injured left a shooting in the New York subway – Diario La Página – 2024-02-15 08:29:54

One person was killed and five others were injured in a shooting that occurred Monday at a New York City subway station, authorities reported.

The scene of violence was sparked by an argument between two groups of teenagers traveling in formation. The shooting began after the train doors opened at a station.

The shooting broke out on an elevated platform in the Bronx around 4:30 p.m., a time when stations throughout the city are filled with children returning home from school and many workers begin their evening commutes.

A man in his 30s was killed, authorities said. A Fire Department spokesperson described four of the injured as serious.

“The train was approaching and there were two children screaming,” witness Efraín Feliciano, 61, told the Daily News. “There were at least six shots.” “I saw flashes when the bullets hit the wall,” Feliciano said. “A woman was holding a screaming child.”

The station where the shooting occurred is located in the Bronx, at the intersection of Mount Eden and Jerome avenues. Videos taken from television news helicopters showed a subway train stopped at the station and orange cones on the platform.

The most recent data indicates that crime remains rare on the New York subway network: about 3.8 million trips are made on the network on a weekday, and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority reported 570 serious assaults on all 2023.

Shootings are particularly rare in New York: in 2022, a gunman injured 10 people on a train passing through Brooklyn, marking the first mass shooting on the subway network since 1984.

Passengers’ fears about the danger of the subway increased at the beginning of the pandemic, when the subway crime rate skyrocketed in early 2020, but fell back to normal levels in 2021. Riders’ perception of the dangers travelers remains high, even as crime rates decline.

Polls show that most Americans favor stricter gun regulation, but the powerful gun lobby and mobilized voters who support the country’s culture of strong gun rights have repeatedly prevented lawmakers from take action.

New York has a murder ratelower than that of many large American cities, and the possession of firearms in public is illegal for civilians in almost all cases.
