ANNOUNCEMENTS

At least nine people have died as a result of oppression in the Ugandan capital Kampala. This happened at a mall when a crowd wanted to see the fireworks there.

The victims, including a 10-year-old boy, were trapped in a narrow passageway in the mall. A police spokesman says the crowd rose after it was announced a fireworks display would begin outside the mall. Many people suffocated in the crowd, police said.

Five people died instantly. Several wounded were taken to hospital, where at least four of them died of their injuries.

Police are investigating whether the mall was negligent.
