At least four Armenian soldiers died this Tuesday in an Azerbaijani attack against Armenian positions in the Nerkin Hand region, on the border between both countries, according to the Armenian Ministry of Defense.
The military statement, published by the official Armenian agency Armenpress, details that from 05:30 (local time), Azerbaijani forces opened fire on the positions of the Armenian Army in Nerkin Hand, in the east of the country.
The Azerbaijani Border Guard confirmed the attack, which it called “operation revenge” in response to an Armenian provocation that, according to Baku, yesterday Monday caused one injury among the Azerbaijani troops.
“As a result of the operation, the post of the Armenian Armed Forces near the town of Nerkin Hand was completely destroyed, from where our soldier was shot yesterday,” the Azerbaijani side notes.
The Azerbaijani government of Ilham Aliyev has already warned that from now on it will respond even more firmly to any action that seeks to aggravate the operational situation on the border.
For its part, the Armenian Ministry of Defense denied that its troops opened fire yesterday against Azerbaijani positions.
The authorities of Armenia and Baku accuse each other of torpedoing the process of normalization of their relations that should be endorsed with the signing of a peace treaty after the war for control of Nagorno Karabakh.
