WASHINGTON, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) – At least five people died after a winter storm hit the northeastern United States this week, the US Weather Channel reported on Thursday.
More than 70,000 users were without power Thursday morning due to power outages for public safety reasons. Hundreds of vehicle crashes, some of them fatal, were reported from the mid-Atlantic region to the northeast.
Meanwhile, a Spirit Airline flight ran off the runway after landing safely at BWI Marshall Airport in Baltimore, Maryland. None of the 111 people on board were injured, WBFF-TV reported.
In New York state, two deaths related to the storm were reported, Governor Andrew Cuomo said Thursday.
Shocking photos of a chain of crashes on Interstate 80 in Clinton County, Pennsylvania, were released Wednesday that featured 66 vehicles, including 11 passengers.
One person died and several others were injured in the chain of crashes, according to state police. The interstate remained closed Thursday afternoon as police and tow trucks worked to remove cars from the scene.
A 63-year-old man walking with a snow blower was struck and killed Wednesday by a snow plow truck in North Versailles, Pennsylvania, KDKA-TV reported.
A collision on Interstate 135 in Park City, Kansas, on Tuesday left one person dead and two others injured, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.
Due to the storm, more than 1,300 flights were canceled in total between Wednesday and Thursday of this week.
“This means a lot of snow. We are not talking about the typical blizzard, but a bigger and bigger storm than usual,” Boston Mayor Marty Walsh told NBC10 Boston.
“This is our first big storm in 19 months here in the city of Boston,” Walsh said.
