At least five killed in attack at mosque in Kabul

At least five people have been killed in a bomb attack near a mosque in Kabul, the Taliban say. It is unknown who is behind the attack, but it is believed to be the Islamic State terrorist group.

A memorial service for the mother of Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid was held at Eid Gah Mosque. According to the Taliban, none of their fighters are among the victims, they are civilian victims. Four injured have been treated in hospital.

Since the Taliban took power in Afghanistan, IS-K, as the Islamic State is called in Afghanistan, has ramped up its attacks. An attack on the airport during the withdrawal of western countries left 169 Afghan and 13 American casualties. IS-K claimed responsibility for the attack.

IS-K is estimated to have between 1,500 and 3,000 fighters and consists of former Taliban fighters, extremist fighters from Gulf countries and IS fighters who have fought in Syria and Iraq. They regard the Taliban as renegades. IS-K is mainly active in the east of the country, in Nangarhar province. The group has claimed recent attacks in the provincial capital of Jalalabad.
