The National Penitentiary Institute (INPE) of Peru reported this Wednesday that at least five people died after a fire broke out inside a penitentiary establishment in the city of Huancayo, department of Junín.
Through a statement, the INPE detailed that the event occurred at approximately 9:30 pm (local time) on Tuesday in the shoe workshop in pavilion two of the prison. Firefighters later contained the flames.
Some relatives tried to force their way into the prison, as seen in some videos spread on social networks, but they were dispersed by the Special Services Unit of the National Police of Peru (PNP).
For its part, the local media RPP accessed the police report and indicated that a minimum of 12 inmates and a firefighter were injured and were transferred to the Daniel Alcides Carrión Hospital in Huancayo.
A woman, a relative of an inmate, assured that there is no clear information about the number of deaths. «They say there are five dead, the other says there are eight dead. We want information directly from INPE, because there are people who have been crying desperately since last night,” he asked.
