At least fifty dead in massacre during Pentecost mass in Nigerian church Abroad

In Nigeria, gunmen have massacred Catholics at a church in Owo, southwestern Ondo state. At least fifty people have been killed and dozens injured, according to doctors from the overflowing hospitals in the area.

The assailants shot and killed churchgoers at St Francis Xavier church during Pentecost Sunday and threw explosives, local media reported. They also allegedly kidnapped several people. Video footage after the shooting shows bodies, including children, in pools of blood.

The region’s leader, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, spoke of a despicable and satanic attack on innocent people. He urged calm and urged people not to take the law into their own hands.

In the north of the West African country, which is predominantly Muslim, there are more frequent robberies by armed gangs, including radical Muslims on churches. Such violence is rare in the Southwest.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, whose government is blamed for the increasing violence in the country, condemned the attack. “Whatever happens, this country will never give in to these evil people. The darkness will never win over the light,” he said.
