At least eight dead after landslide on Italian island of Ischia | Abroad

At least eight people have died after a landslide on the island of Ischia in southern Italy. Several people are still missing.

The landslide occurred after sudden heavy rains. Last Saturday it was announced that at least thirteen people are missing.

The local firefighters reported during the day that searches are underway for the missing in the municipality of Casamicciola. Among them is a family with father, mother and newborn. It is unclear if they have been found.

At least 20 families have been isolated by the natural disaster, according to the city’s mayor. More than ten buildings were destroyed by the landslide and many roads were blocked. This makes it difficult for rescuers to reach the area.

Two people were rescued from their car after the vehicle was swept into the sea by a landslide. The images show that several cars were swept away by the landslide on Saturday morning and that houses were almost completely buried.

Ischia is located off the coast of the city of Naples and is best known as a holiday destination.
