At least 72 dead in riots in South Africa

72 people have died in the unrest in South Africa. The unrest was caused by the imprisonment of former President Jacob Zuma.

Police say most of the victims died during the looting of food, electrical goods, alcohol and clothing stores.

2,500 soldiers have also been involved in maintaining order in the two provinces and about 1,200 people have been detained, but the riots have not been stopped.

CONTEXT:

At the end of June, the Constitutional Court sentenced Zuma to 15 months in prison for contempt of court. He has been charged with a total of 16 charges of corruption, money laundering, fraud and racketeering. Widespread protests, riots and shoplifting began in the country.
