At least seven people have died and several were injured, including two agents, in a mega-operation deployed this Tuesday by the Brazilian Police in several favelas of Rio de Janeiro, dominated by the Red Command, one of the largest criminal groups in the country.
The Military Police detailed that in the community of Sao Joao de Meriti, four suspects clashed with the agents when they tried to flee in a stolen car and, despite being taken to the hospital, they did not resist their injuries and died.
Additionally, in the Flexal favela, the Police reported that three other suspects were killed in a confrontation.
“We are determined to take measures against organized crime and arrest its members, with the aim of guaranteeing the security not only of the northern and western regions, but also of the metropolitan area and the interior of the state,” the Police said. Military.
According to the press, the authorities deployed entry and exit controls in the communities to prevent the escape of the suspects.
As soon as the operation began, the drug traffickers set fire to barricades to try to contain the advance of the agents.
One of the objectives of the operation is the arrest of Edgar Alves de Andrade, known as ‘Doca’, one of the leaders of the gang and responsible for disputes over territory in the western area of the capital.
