At least 60 dead in Sudanese dam collapse

Jartum. The collapse of the Arbaat dam on Sunday killed at least 60 people and left hundreds missing in Port Sudan, in the east of the country, according to an initial count released by official sources.

The catastrophe was caused by torrential downpours that have hit the African country this month, causing flooding that has isolated several cities and areas of the capital and made life even more tragic for Sudanese people after nearly 16 months of civil war.

Port Sudan was for months spared from the war between General Abdel Fattah al Burhan, president of the Transitional Sovereign Council (TSC), and the head of the Rapid Support Forces militia, General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, but is now flooded after the reservoir gave way to thousands of tons of water.

The force of the torrent also caused significant material damage, although the exact magnitude is yet to be determined, according to official sources.

General al-Burhan visited the city the day before to assess the scale of the disaster; Sudanese director of water resources, Amr Eissa Taher, said the damage was “extensive” and reported that “houses and farms were swept away by the waters.”

The deaths and material damage add to the long list of more than 15,000 dead and tens of thousands wounded caused by the civil war between al-Burhan and Hamdan Dagalo and the displacement of some 11 million people who have become internal and international refugees.
